What makes Leaders fail?

This research has been conducted by Szu-Han (Joanna) Lin, Brent A. Scott & Fadel K. Matta and published in Academy of Management Journal.

The research focuses on identification of factors that result in negative outcomes of Transformational leaders that are considered best to bring positive change in an organization. The study talks about COR theory that states that people try to keep their resources and once these are lost, create emotional exhaustion and finally results in more detrimental effects on transformational leaders.

For this research data was collected from 130 pairs of leaders and followers from different organizations. The leaders’ sample contained 55% males and 45% females with average age of 45 years, while in followers’ sample, makes contributed to 41% and females to 59% with average age at 38 years.

The study ahs proved that when transformational leaders aspire for the welfare of their followers, sometimes their own personally gets effected due to followers. The contributing factors are leaders’ own emotional exhaustion and subsequent turnover intentions that are significantly impacted by conscientiousness and competencies of followers.
