This research has been conducted by Laura Claus and Paul Tracey and published in Academy of Management Journal on August 2020.
The research focuses on identification of ways firms can remain protected from strong guarded institutions as firms are unable to speak against such coercive institutions publicly. The study talks about an international child rights organization who worked with a local NGO and an activist. The study states child marriages as guarded institutions that is a major challenge in developing countries like Indonesia.
For this research data was collected from through a qualitative longitudinal study. International Childs Right Organization (ICO) launched a campaign against child marriages. ICO worked closely with government and religious leaders to create awareness about nutrition, health and education as they couldn’t speak openly about child marriages.
The study states that two strategies can help in challenging guarded institutions; the crafting of an alter ego through social movement by creating alternative public face and using alter ego to create public dissent through high-stakes events through mobilization by activist groups.
